RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with France's air force in a joint strike against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The location, identified by surveillance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was positioned in hills just north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a series of approach shafts down to the depot... early reports indicate the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the operation on Saturday evening and every plane involved made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as Daesh - imposed militant control over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike demonstrates the UK's leading role, and determination to operate in unison with allied nations, to eradicate any resurgence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary the minister said.

British military aircraft have carried out patrols over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of the group subsequent to its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank every member of the UK armed forces involved in this operation for their professionalism and their courage," Healey commented. "Including them were a great many British personnel on duty over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to take out militants who threaten our way of life, shows how British military are ready to step up, all year round, protecting the UK at home and strong abroad."

During December, the American forces conducted what it called a "massive strike" on Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an ambush claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations says IS still has between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in both countries.
