The buzz about the recent awards show reached a fever pitch, especially after presenter Geoff Keighley shared a mysterious photo of a desert monolith. The secret has now been solved. Larian Studios is creating a fresh Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a audacious trailer featuring intense imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the very descent into chaos.
A Different Direction
For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian warned that a follow-up to its beloved RPGs is not currently in development.
That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This phrasing suggests that the team is likely crafting a faster-paced experience rather than another tactical title. For now, this is speculation, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
What Makes Divinity Special
The Divinity series is widely praised and it's fair to claim it pioneered the modern wave of deep computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for intricate stories, player agency, and deep class systems—elements that subsequently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is classic fantasy, what makes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency bestowed upon the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is packed with specialized paths only possible if you're playing as a distinct build with a specific history of choices.
The series is also notoriously open-ended, letting players to improvise in narrative and gameplay. Virtually all objectives can be completed in diverse methods, sometimes in unexpected fashion.
- You might find an answer because you recalled something a dog told you.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by teleporting a glob of lava in a inventive way.
More to Come
It is this design philosophy that have cemented the series to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games of all time. Now, the RPG community can get ready for more where that came from in this legendary franchise.
