Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for hours when numerous of them drifted across the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend passed through the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and near the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that these practices become not financially viable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have led European authorities to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
